“Wake up!” We find this invitation in multiple places in God’s word. Why? Ephesians 5:13-14 says, “But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: ‘Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” We are invited to wake up so that we might see the light of God. The prophets invite God’s people to wake up to grasp the reality of our sinfulness, to see injustice, to empathize with the plight of others, all so that we may return to God’s ways and find hope in nearness of God’s salvation.
